Why We Serve: One study found that 45 percent of people who have died by suicide visited their primary care physician within a month of their death... (Ahmedani et al, 2014) https://cdn.ymaws.com/www.ohiochc.org/resource/resmgr/webinars/07_2020_Suicide_Safer_Care.pdf
Many primary care visits are related to behavioral health needs and many medical problems like diabetes and high blood pressure are the result of poor health care habits that worsen health outcomes. We can help you and your medical staff with depression screeners to help identify concerns, teach basic motivational interviewing (MI) and brief interventions to improve behavioral activation to reduce hospitalization stays and improve the overall health and life outcomes of the patients you see. We can also help your staff learn behavioral health basics to help them feel more comfortable when managing clients struggling with behavioral health crisis.
Who we Serve and How We Can Help You:
How we help your existing behavioral health department at your FQHC or outpatient therapy practice?
We help you train your licensed clinicians on the role of Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) as most psychotherapist are not trained to be BHCs in graduate school and adapting the needed skills for success to the PCP setting requires adjustment and support from knowledgeable peers, and WE would love to support the staff with this.
Does the staff need to have a mental health license to start integrating behavioral health (BH) into the medical practice or can the nurses and existing office staff be trained?
It is important that all the staff are equally equipped with the basic BH knowledge and insight to begin addressing the whole person, limiting the over use of pharmacological interventions on minorities and underprivileged groups. Those groups are not always provided alternatives to medicine. Training the team on how to read the PHQ-9, GAD-7 screeners and administering the C-SSRS suicide assessment are a few of the behavioral health basics and skills to help all staff feel equipped when interacting with your patients. Team members can learn more about behavioral modifications and behavioral activations that could potentially improve both physical and behavioral health outcomes with no additional outside referral needed or interventions used. Behavioral activation can be as simple encouraging a client to walk twice a week to improve depression.
